Attack on MP Motorcade

Cop, 4 others hurt in clash in Feni

Five people, including a policeman, were injured when a clash broke out over an attack on the motorcade of independent lawmaker Rahim Ullah in Feni yesterday.

Quoting witnesses, police said a group of Jubo League and Chhatra League activists attacked the motorcade of Rahim Ullah of Feni-2 at the zero point of Sonagazi upazila around 7:00pm when the MP was on his way to Dhaka.

Following the attack, activists loyal to Rahim got locked into a clash with the attackers. Inspector Mesbah Uddin and four people were injured. Several homemade bombs were also exploded during the clash.

Mesbah was admitted to Sonagazi Health Complex.

Talking to reporters, the MP alleged that the ruling party men launched the attack.

However, Ruhul Amin, acting president of Sonagazi upazila unit of AL, refuted the allegation.

Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Police Station, said adequate police personnel were deployed to avoid any untoward incident.

Locals said Rahim Ullah was at loggerheads with district AL President Nizam Uddin Hazari over establishing supremacy in the area.

Nizam was unhappy after Rahim, also the president of Jeddah chapter AL, was elected independent lawmaker through the January 5 elections and took control of his constituency, they added.

It was the third time in the last two years that Rahim Ullah came under attack allegedly by ruling party men.
