Attempted rape: minor dies by suicide in Lalmonirhat

A 14-year-old girl, who faced attempted rape, died by suicide in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila last night.

The victim, hailing from Kazir Chawra village in the upazila, hanged herself in her bedroom after she was verbally abused by families of the two suspects, deceased's family claimed.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to morgue for autopsy, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent.

Police said victim's father filed a case with Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station on September 8, accusing Hamidul Islam and Nur Islam, saying that the duo attempted to rape his daughter the previous day.

After the case was filed, police arrested Hamidul, main accused in the case, while another accused went into hiding.

The victim's father alleged that the family members of the two accused rebuked his daughter after he filed the case.

They demanded proper investigation into the incident and punishment of the accused.

Lalmonirhat District Superintendent of Police (SP) Abida Sultana told The Daily Star that police are looking into the matter. The SP added that after the case was filed, she had met the girl and promised her of all-out support and cooperation.

Police will take action according to law after proper investigation, she said.
