The week in re(ar)view

See no evil, hear no evil
Here's the gist of a typical police story.
Scene: Shooting Complex.

Enter a police DIG's car with his wife in it. Driver parks in front of complex and security guard tells him he cannot. Driver says he can. Possibly a few lines of “Do you know who I am?” ensued and a brawl started. National shooters including Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist Asif Hossain Khan as well as Shoebuzzaman and others apparently came to the scene to try to break up the brawl. Police came and started a baton frenzy. More shooters came out. More police beating ensued. At one point police apparently tried to storm the women's quarters in search of what only 'man' knows. Some of the shooters were taken to jail and released on bail bleeding all over the place.

No proof as to what really happened as yet but indiscriminate police beatings are common. But so is the public's tendency to become rowdy.

Moral of the story: Don't go to see any brawl.
Focal point of the story: Police must be really brave or else they would not have entered shooting complex to beat up shooters. Sadly none got shot.

Further focal point to make a short story long: Shooters don't seem to be any good at what they do or else the cops should have been full of holes.

Bangladeshis versus cockroaches
The Bangladeshi stomach is a mystery that should be investigated. We seem to have stomachs that are capable of withstanding all kinds of abuse in the form of food we take. Just imagine the textile dyes, fertilizer chemicals, engine oil, pesticide and whatnot added to our food and we still live. Not only that we thrive and populate the country further.

Now we have rotten fish being dried and sold as, well, dried fish. This is a great idea because as you know dried fish (shutki) already smells horribly like rotten fish. No one will be able to tell the difference unless you see the pic published on October 2 front page. And even then it looks like the normal shutki.

It is said that cockroaches are the most resilient of species. They can apparently survive anything. Doomsday theorists (including our Resident Conspiracy Theorist) say that if the earth suffers a catastrophic nuclear disaster the only living things will be cockroaches. Apparently they will be living inside the super strong stomachs of Bangladeshis. It's going to be a B grade movie without the audience.

Still missing
While on the topic of fish, about 1000 fishermen are still missing in the Bay of Bengal due to the storm that hit about a week ago. A report on October 2 stated that 19 more bodies have come floating in. Maybe people are not just meant to earn a living in this country.

Refugees in Spain
In western countries people cry for abandoned cats found by the roadside. We don't shed a tear for 300 youths who have been abandoned at a refugee camp in Spain. These young men come from poor families with hopes of going abroad and bringing in foreign currency. They borrow and sell everything to gather the money and travel agents simply cheat them of their precious little wealth while authorities sit at home and throw Rising Stars into the trash can. While other immigrants get legal status our people are to be deported.

No, shedding a tear for them is pointless. Making the responsible travel agents shed many, many tears wouldn't even be enough. How do these families repay the loans they must have taken?

Dear Tasnia,
Your article 'grown up child' was a very touching one. While I was reading it a tear trickled down my cheeks and I realized that there was something very wrong with your article, something that made me, just look at it for, quite a long moment. You said that your maid made you feel guilty….why? I look at people around me complaining, feeling guilty and some actually coming forward and writing articles like you did, and I appreciate you for that. However what I think is sooo wrong with us is the fact that we see so many horrible things around us taking place that we have forgotten who we are as a human being and whether we really are doing something immoral or not, we are now confused as to what is right and what is wrong. If I say now that you are doing something very wrong to even allow this girl to work at your house, as a reply you are going to say that 'if we didn't hire her she would have either died out of poverty or would have resorted to something even worse'…..but guess what those are not only the two options we have, you can actually take her in as a member of your family treat her like a 10 year old and really care for her. I know she is just one girl out of millions, but you too are only one girl out of millions who can do something about them. Mother Teresa once said 'help people out of your necessity not your abundance', but then again you don't really have to do that you just have to redefine what your necessity is and what your abundance is…..

Laff lines

A lawyer read the will of a rich man to the deceased's family: "To my loving wife Rose, who stood by me in rough times, as well as good, I leave the house and $2 million."

The lawyer continued, "To my daughter Jessica, who looked after me in sickness and kept the business going, I leave the yacht, the business and $1million."

The lawyer concluded, "And, to my cousin Dan, who hated me, argued with me, and thought that I would never mention him in my will - well you are wrong. Hi Dan!"

Daddy swap
The children begged for a hamster, and after the usual fervent vows that they alone would care for it, they got one. They named it Danny.

Two months later, when Mom found herself responsible for cleaning and feeding the creature, she located a prospective new home for it.

The children took the news of Danny's imminent departure quite well, though one of them remarked, "He's been around here a long time--we'll miss him."

"Yes," Mom replied, "But he's too much work for one person, and since I'm that one person, I say he goes."

Another child offered, "Well, maybe if he wouldn't eat so much and wouldn't be so messy, we could keep him."

But Mom was firm. "It's time to take Danny to his new home now," she insisted. "Go and get his cage."

With one voice and in tearful outrage the children shouted, "Danny? We thought you said Daddy!"

Bratz: Passion for Fashion

Did you know that Bratz are in and Barbies are out ? I just found this out this April when my mother brought me a Bratz doll called ¡®Meygan¡¯ from Harrogate. She had an Italian flag on her T-Shirt. I immediately realized that Meygan was a football fashion Bratz. What I did not know then was that Meygan who was an Italian football fashion funk would win the World Cup 2006 !

Bratz dolls have captivated the market since 2001. Currently it seems that in many parts of the world they are the No.1 selling fashion doll. Bratz are tiny compared to Barbie dolls. They are approximately 10¡± inches in height. They have a broad face with elongated eyes. They have a lot of make up on and have thick lips with heavy lipstick. They have coloured hair and wear studs for earrings. They have funky and fashionable outfits. They have a lot of accessories, e.g. sunglasses, bag packs, vanity bags, hairbrushes, snap-on shoes etc.

Interesting thing about them is their attitude. Though tiny they look mischievous and have a smug and daring attitude. Some are quite snobbish and others are quite cute. There are adult Bratz as well as baby ones.

There are a lot of Bratz. Some names are Dana, Fianna, Nevra, Sasha, Jade, Meygan, Cloe, Roxy and Yasmin. Recently I got Jade from my mother and I think she is gorgeous. She is called “Kool Kat “ by her friends because she thinks she is cool and loves cats. Some Bratz are into sports and some into fashion. They are all very stylish and very conscious about themselves. All of them have another unique feature when you change their shoes, you actually change their feet, this feature obviously is not very realistic but it does solve the problem of picking up tiny shoes thrown all over the house. It seems that in most parts of the world, all girls 9-12 are crazy about Bratz.

Well, one more striking thing about Bratz is it is the only doll with a 'passion for fashion¡'. So go on and amuse yourself with Bratz.
