HC orders action against Amini
The High Court has asked the government to take action against Islami Oikya Jote Chairman Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini for his remark which it said undermined the country's charter. Earlier, Shahriar filed the petition with the High Court on July 20 seeking necessary directives on the government to take action against Amini. During the Hearing of the writ on August 17 eminent writer and journalist Shahriar Kabir and Islami Oikya Jote Chairman Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini had a war of words in a courtroom against Amini's derogatory comment on the constitution. Shahriar accused Amini of being involved in Islamist militancy and the serial bomb blasts across the country on August 17, 2005 during the hearing at the High Court. -The Daily star onlinr edition August 17 2011.
Huji chief held
The wanted head of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (Huji), Moulana Yahiya, has been arrested along with his two accomplices in Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj on August 18. Rab (Rapid Action Battation) arrested the three intercepting a Kishoreganj-bound passenger bus from Sylhet, Maj Walid Hossain of legal and media wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) told The Daily Star. Yahiya is wanted in several major militant attacks, including the August 21 grenade attack, Ramna Batamul blast and Kotalipara bomb planting. A top Rab official identified the two others as Mohammad Bahauddin, 22, and Yar Mohammad, 50. - The Daily star onlinr edition August 17 2011.
Hearing on Sayedee's charge framing begins
International Crimes Tribunal started the hearing on charge framing against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee on on August 18 in connection with crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War. The three-judge panel headed by Justice Nizamul Huq started the proceedings. Earlier on August 10, the tribunal adjourned the hearing till August 18 following a time petition filed by the defence lawyers seeking an eight-week adjournment of the hearing. - The Daily star onlinr edition August 17 2011.
HC for report about road safety
measures by Oct 17
The High Court on August 17 directed the government to submit to it by October 17 a comprehensive report on the measures taken in the last five years to repair roads and highways, prevent road accidents and ensure road safety across the country. The report must contain how much money was allocated for roads and highways, how the money was spent and what measures have been taken for development of roads and highways during this period. The court also asked the government to explain within six weeks its failure to conduct proper investigation into road accidents, and why it should not be directed to prosecute and punish people responsible for the accidents. The HC fixed October 18 for hearing on the rule. An HC bench comprised of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Md Nuruzzaman issued the rule in response to a writ petition filed as a public interest litigation following the death of eminent filmmaker Tareque Masud and broadcast journalist Ashfaque Mishuk Munier in a road accident. -The Daily star August 18 2011.
Probe body finds faults on road
The investigation committee for road crash occurred on August 13, which killed filmmaker Tareque Masud and media personality Mishuk Munier, found that the poorly maintained Dhaka-Aricha highway was too narrow at the spot and had incorrect road markings. The total road width at the spot should have been 10.3 metres, standard for a straight road, but it was only 8.7 metres, the enquiry committee found. A member of the committee said they found that each lane at that curve of the highway were about a metre less wide than they should have been for even a straight road. Earlier, the three-member communications ministry probe committee was asked to submit its report within seven days from August 13.- The Daily star August 18 2011.
HC summons 9 over arbitration
After the suicide of a mother along with her two children in Habiganj, the High Court on August 16 summoned nine people including a union chairman and a police officer to explain their roles over the tragic incident. They will have to appear before the court on August 23. Ferdausi Akhter, 35, and her two children aged six and eight died as she jumped under a train with her four kids in Madhabpur upazila on August 15. The two others survived but sustained critical injuries. They were admitted to Brahmanbaria sadar hospital. The day before she committed suicide, an arbitration asked her to leave the village, accusing her of having an illicit relation with a man, according to news reports. The HC order came following reports published in newspapers including The Daily Star, stating that she committed suicide failing to stand the humiliation at the arbitration.-The Daily star August 18 2011.
