Aug 21 case: Arrest warrant against Tarique
A Dhaka court on July 14 issued arrest warrant against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman, and 11 others in a case filed in connection with August 21 grenade attack case. Judge Md Zahurul Huq of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order as the accused have been shown fugitive in the case filed under the Explosive Substance Act. In response to a plea from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the court had issued arrest warrants against 18 people on that day.-The Daily star online edition July 14 2011.
Sayedee's war charges taken into cognisance
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on July 14 took into cognisance the formal charges against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee in connection with crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War. The three-member tribunal headed by Justice Nizamul Huq fixed August 10 for hearing on the charge framing against the Jamaat leader. The tribunal directed the prosecution to submit the copy of formal charges, the relevant documents and papers and other materials in support of the allegations against Sayedee to the registrar by July 17 so that the defence can collect those. The court also directed the defence to collect the copies and papers from the registrar office by July 19.- The Daily star online edition July 14 2011.
Bashundhara Chief, Govt moves
against HC acquittal
The government has moved against the acquittal of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan in a tax evasion case. The attorney general's office on July 11 submitted a petition to the High Court, seeking withdrawal of its verdict that scrapped eight years' imprisonment of Sobhan, also known as Shah Alam, in the case. The HC bench of Justice Abdul Hye and Justice Rezaul Hasan on June 20 this year allowed the appeal by the Bashundhara Group boss, and scrapped his eight years' imprisonment in the case. Earlier, A Dhaka court on September 30, 2007, handed down the jail sentence in the case filed by the National Board of Revenue on charges of evading Tk 8.48 crore in income tax between 2004 and 2007.- The Daily star July 14 2011.
Case against home minister rejected
A Dhaka Court on July 12 dismissed an attempt-to-murder case against 400 people, including the home minister and her deputy, within a couple of hours into its filing. Meanwhile, the High Court on July 12 granted anticipatory bail to Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque and BNP lawmaker Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia for three months in a criminal case filed by police. Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-Or-Rashid dismissed the attempt-to-murder case finding “no elements” to take into cognisance the charges against the accused. Home Minister Sahara Khatun, State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku, Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmud Khandker and DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed were among the accused.- The Daily star July 13 2011.
Contempt rule against 11 senior govt officers
The High Court on July 11 issued a contempt of court rule against 11 senior government officers, including five secretaries, for not fully implementing its order on protecting the four rivers in and around the capital. The HC bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice M Moazzam Husain issued the rule asking the officials to explain within four weeks why they should not be punished for violating its directives on making the rivers free from encroachment and pollution. The officials who faced the petition are secretaries to the ministries of planning, finance, shipping, communications and water resources; directors general of departments of land record and survey, and environment; chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authoritiy; and deputy commissioners of Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur. The bench issued the rule after hearing a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on July 10.- The Daily star July 13 2011.
Police sue 140 named in five cases
Police on July 10 filed five separate cases with three police stations in the district accusing some 140 hartal activists named and many more unnamed for obstructing police from duty and attacking law enforcers during Sunday's hartal. Abul Kalam Azad, sub-inspector of Fatullah Police Station, filed two cases against 40 persons named and many others unidentified for vandalism, looting, and attacks on police. Of the sued, 15 had been arrested. Shahjahan Monir and Abul Kalam, sub-inspectors of Siddhirganj Police Station, lodged two separate cases accusing 67 people named and many more unnamed, including nine arrested. They were sued for obstructing police and vandalising transports on highways. About 33 persons named, including six arrested, and many others unidentified were accused in a case, filed by Sub-inspector Shahjahan Mia of Sonargaon Police Station, for rioting during the 30-hour hartal called by 12 small Islamist parties.- The Daily star July 12 2011.
