Road killing at 300 feet: Buet students demand unbiased probe, justice

Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) held a demonstration today, demanding justice for their fellow student Mohtassim Masud, who was killed in a road accident on the Purbachal Expressway yesterday.
The students gathered at the BUET Shaheed Minar and called for punishment of the driver responsible for the accident. They also urged authorities to ensure that Masud's family receives adequate compensation and that the medical expenses of the two injured classmates are fully covered.
In their statement, read out by three of Masud's classmates, the protesters stressed the need for an unbiased investigation and warned against any attempts to obstruct the legal process. They also criticized misleading comments made by the defendant's lawyer and accused sections of the media of misrepresenting the incident as an accident instead of a deliberate act.
Masud, a 22-year-old Computer Science and Engineering student, was killed when a speeding car struck him and two of his classmates as they waited on their stationary motorcycle near a police checkpoint. The incident occurred near Neela Market on Purbachal Expressway, locally known as the 300-feet road. Police stated that the car was being recklessly driven by a 20-year-old man and confirmed that Masud died at the scene.
The protest also highlighted allegations of police inaction, with students claiming that officers were uncooperative during the case filing process.
Earlier in the day, BUET students staged a demonstration outside Rupganj Police Station and held a rally near the BUET campus, demanding swift action against the driver.
The protesters called on the government to take meaningful steps to ensure road safety, emphasizing that no more lives should be lost due to reckless driving.
