UN fully committed to Rohingya crisis solution

In a powerful letter to Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, the UN secretary general, António Guterres, has reaffirmed the global body's unwavering solidarity with Bangladesh in its ongoing efforts to manage the humanitarian impact of the Rohingya crisis.
The letter, sent yesterday, highlights the increasing strain that the Rohingya refugee situation has placed on Bangladesh, especially given the worsening conditions in Myanmar's Rakhine state, according to CA office.
He further emphasised the global community's continued support for Bangladesh, particularly in facilitating humanitarian aid and livelihood support for the displaced communities.
In the letter, Guterres assured Yunus saying, "I would like to reiterate the strong solidarity of the United Nations with Bangladesh and our support for the transition process under your leadership."
Expressed his commitment to resolving the crisis through diplomatic efforts, he said, "I share your concerns regarding the impact of the Rohingya crisis on Bangladesh and the region, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation in Rakhine."
He added that the UN would continue to work closely with regional actors, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and other stakeholders to ensure a political solution to the crisis in Myanmar. Guterres stressed the importance of creating "conditions conducive to the safe and voluntary return of the Rohingya to Rakhine."
The UN chief also pledged to prioritise humanitarian assistance, saying, "I have requested my senior managers to provide guidance to the United Nations Country Teams in Bangladesh and Myanmar on how we can maximize humanitarian aid and livelihood support to communities in Rakhine."
Looking ahead, Guterres expressed hope for the upcoming high-level conference on the situation of the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar, as a key opportunity to renew global attention to the crisis and foster solutions.
"I am hopeful that the High-level Conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar will be an opportunity to galvanize renewed global attention and contribute to developing a wider range of solutions for Rohingya and other minorities, " he remarked.
"I look forward to furthering our discussions during my upcoming visit to Bangladesh in March during the holy month of Ramadan,"Guterres said.
