Six factories of the controversial business giant S Alam Group in Chattogram were abruptly shut down yesterday until further notice.

The factories declared closed are S Alam Refined Sugar Industries, S Alam Power Plant, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited-NOF, S Alam Power Generation and Infinity CR Strips Industries. Two of those are located in Kalarrpool in Karnaphuli Upazila of Chattogram, three in Ichhanagar and one in Banshkhali upazila.

The factories were closed due to a shortage of raw materials, said Ashish Kumar Nath, deputy manager of S Alam Group. However, the salaries of workers and employees will continue as usual.

At least 12,000 workers and employees work in the six factories.

"Even though everything is running normally in our factory, a sudden notice of closing the factory was issued -- I don't know for what reason the factory has been closed," said Nazim Uddin, production manager of S Alam Cold Rolled Steels.

The notice signed by S Alam Group's head of human resources and administration Mohammad Borhan Uddin said due to unavoidable reasons, the factories will be closed from today until further notice, as per the instructions of the authorities. However, the security, supply and emergency departments of the factories will remain open.

Preferring anonymity, two officials from the head office of S Alam Group said raw materials could not be imported due to lack of cooperation from the bank.

If raw materials cannot be imported, there is no chance of re-starting the factory, they said.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed a case against 58 people including the eldest son of Saiful Alam and Saiful's brother over misappropriating Tk 1,100 core by way of anonymous loans.
