Md Aminul Islam, newly appointed chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), has warned that strict action will be taken if any prosecutor is found to be involved in irregularities or corruption.

He made the remarks at a press conference at the Chief Prosecutor’s Office today while responding to journalists’ questions.

“My responsibility is clear. If any prosecutor or anyone else is found involved in any kind of irregularity or corruption during my tenure, strict action will be taken,” he said.

“We will prove that this tribunal is completely free from corruption. Proceedings here will meet international standards. We will not entertain any discussion beyond that,” he added.

Aminul said the tribunal must operate strictly in accordance with the law. He called for increased transparency alongside faster proceedings, noting that the prosecution team has been discussing ways to expedite the disposal of cases in line with the aspirations of the July uprising.

He said formal charges have already been filed in 24 cases, with trials currently underway in 21 cases at the tribunal’s two benches.

However, he added that he has not yet reviewed the details of the cases and has requested that all documents be submitted to him.

“After scrutiny, if it appears that investigations were not conducted properly or if any flaws are detected, necessary steps will be taken in accordance with the law,” he said.

Md Aminul Islam has been appointed as the new chief prosecutor of the ICT yesterday, replacing Tajul Islam.
