Govt announces official list of public holidays for 2026

Of these, 11 days coincide with weekly holidays

The government has announced the official list of public holidays for 2026, with a total of 28 days off.

The holiday list includes 14 general holidays and 14 declared under executive order. Of these, 11 coincide with weekends, allowing government employees to enjoy 17 full days off.

Following approval by the Advisory Council last Thursday, the Ministry of Public Administration has issued a formal notification regarding the holiday list.

Similar to this year, holidays for Eid ul Fitr will be 5 days, Eid ul Adha will be 6 days, and Durga Puja for 2 days in 2026, the official notification confirmed.

Offices that operate under their own laws and regulations regarding working hours and holidays may declare holidays considering public interest, following their respective rules.

GENERAL HOLIDAYS

According to the government announcement, public holidays in 2026 include:

February 21 – Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day

March 20 – Jumatul Bida

March 21 – Eid ul Fitr

March 26 – Independence and National Day

May 1 – May Day, Buddha Purnima (Boishakhi Purnima)

May 28 – Eid ul Azha

August 5 – Mass Uprising Day

August 26 – Eid-e-Miladunnabi (PBUH)

September 4 – Janmashtami

October 21 – Durga Puja (Bijoya Dashami)

December 16 – Victory Day

December 25 – Christmas Day

HOLIDAYS UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDER

As per the government circular, the following days will be observed as holidays under executive order:

February 4 – Shab-e-Barat

March 17 – Shab-e-Qadr

March 19–20 and March 22–23 – a total of four days, including two days before and two days after Eid-ul-Fitr

April 14 – Bangla New Year (Pahela Baishakh)

May 26–27 – two days before Eid u Azha

May 29–31 – three days after Eid ul Azha

June 26 – Ashura

October 20 – Durga Puja (Mahanabami)

The circular also mentioned that dates of holidays dependent on the sighting of the moon may change as necessary.

Apart from these, government employees may enjoy optional holidays as per the declared rules.
