First phase of Ijtema ends with ‘Akheri Munajat’

The first phase of Bishwa Ijtema concluded yesterday through "Akheri Munajat" seeking divine blessings for peace and prosperity of the Muslim Ummah.

The final prayer was conducted by Maulana Zubair, top spiritual leader of Shura-e-Nizam, Bangladesh.

Maulana Kefayet Ullah, another senior leader, said the prayer began at 9:00am and ended around 9:35am.

Nearly four million devotees joined the concluding prayers.

Habibullah Raihan, media coordinator of the Ijtema's Shura-e-Nizam, said around 3,050 delegates from 76 countries took part in the gathering.

The first phase, attended by followers of Maulana Zubair Ahmed, began on January 31 and is divided into two sessions. The Akheri Munajat for the second session of Zubair's followers will take place on February 5, with devotees from 22 districts expected to join.

Followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi will attend the second phase from February 14 to 16, with their Akheri Munajat scheduled for February 16.

Meanwhile, at least 40 people were injured in a commotion at the Ijtema ground after a drone crashed, triggering panic among devotees.

The injured were taken to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Gazipur.

Faridul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station, said the drone crashed near the Mill Gate of the Ijtema venue, causing a sudden panic. As devotees rushed toward the exit points, many fell and sustained injuries.

It was not immediately clear who owned the drone or why it fell.

Mostafizur Rahman, emergency department officer at the hospital, confirmed that at least 40 injured devotees were brought in following the incident.

Five devotees attending the Biswa Ijtema have passed away during the first phase.

The deceased are Abdul Gafur, 75, Romij Ali, 60, Yakut Ali, 60, Abdul Quddus Gazi, 60, and Sabet Ali, 65.
