Bagerhat's footpath markets bustling with activity

As a biting cold wave grips the country, the demand for winter clothing has surged in Bagerhat, offering much-needed relief to low and middle-income groups. Makeshift winterwear stalls on footpaths have become a haven for those seeking affordable warm clothing.
Popular locations such as the Dargah Mazar field, Old Court premises, and the Rail Station are witnessing a shopping frenzy, with smiles lighting up the faces of shoppers as they find quality garments at budget-friendly prices.
A visit to the bustling footpath markets reveals an impressive variety of winter essentials. Children's jumpers are being sold for Tk 150-300, men's hoodies for Tk 250-350, and women's sweaters for Tk 250-550. Shawls are priced between Tk 250-450, while woollen caps, gloves, and scarves range from Tk 60-220.

The affordability of these items has drawn crowds of lower-income families eager to shield themselves from the chill without exceeding their budgets.
Hanif Sheikh, a vendor at one of these footpath markets, said winter season is a golden opportunity for business.

"This is the peak season for sales and intensifying cold has significantly boosted his earnings," he said.
Hanif reported daily sales of Tk 6,000-8,000, yielding a profit of Tk 2,500-3,000 per bundle. He expressed optimism that sales would rise even further if the temperature continues to drop.
Shoppers are equally pleased with their purchases. Sharif Haldar, one of the buyers, said the quality of the items was surprisingly good for a footpath market.
He said a sweater he purchased for Tk 400-500 would cost over Tk 1,000 in a regular store.
Homemaker Asiya Akter echoed him.The ongoing cold wave has intensified the urgency for warm clothing. According to Harun Or Rashid, acting officer at the Mongla Weather Office, the minimum temperature in Bagerhat today was recorded at 13 degrees Celsius.
He mentioned that this temperature is expected to persist for the next two to three days.
