DU, 7-college scuffle: Hasnat at DU to dissuade students

Amid a chase and counter-chase between the students of seven colleges and Dhaka University, Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, arrived at the scene in an attempt to dissuade them.

He came to the spot around 12:30am today and talked to the DU students. The Daily Star's DU correspondent said students of Eden College also took position at the New Market intersection after 12:30am.

He also said at least five people were injured by brickbats thrown by both sides.

Earlier, students of seven colleges clashed with DU students who came to besiege the residence of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed.The chase and counter-chase started from Nilkhet intersection and spread to Mirpur Road.

At one stage of the chase, students of seven colleges took position on Mirpur Road and lit a fire.

Police fired sound grenades and tear gas to disperse both sides.

Students of seven colleges took position at Nilkhet intersection around 11:00pm last night while DU students stood guard in front of Sir AF Rahman Hall of the university.

Due to unavoidable reasons, all examinations and classes of DU have been postponed today (January 27), read a press release issued by its public relations office.

Earlier in the evening, students of seven colleges blocked the Science Lab intersection and announced that they would besiege the residence of DU pro-VC if he did not apologise publicly for what they claimed was "misbehaviour with students of seven colleges".
