Two days after returning from his visit to Dhaka, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri today briefed the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of External Affairs on his interaction with the top leaders of Bangladesh's interim government, including Chief Adviser Prof Yunus.

After coming out from the over two-and-a-half-hour-long meeting held at the parliament annex building in New Delhi, Shashi Tharoor, chairman of the committee, told the media that the foreign secretary, fresh from the trip from Dhaka "was able to give us a thorough briefing".

Tharoor said he was not at liberty to go into the details of what transpired at the meeting but added that "all the important questions that you can imagine were asked by the MPs. There was a good 21-22 MPs turnout and a lot of questions were asked."

The foreign secretary answered the questions "comprehensively and candidly," Tharoor added.

He said the committee would be reporting to parliament on the outcome of today's meeting as it is an official topic of the panel which requires a parliamentary report which will happen sometime next year.

"For now, the discussions will continue and a very good beginning has been made," said the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram.

Misri's visit was the first top-level diplomatic contact between New Delhi and Dhaka and the first structured meeting in the form of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) since Sheikh Hasina's ouster from power on August 5.

Besides calling on Yunus, Misri also met Foreign Adviser Touhid Hussain and his Bangladeshi counterpart Jashim Uddin in Dhaka.
