Six smugglers held with deer meat in Mongla

The Coast Guard's Mongla West Zone detained six individuals and seized 11 kilograms of illegal deer meat near the Mongla Ferry Ghat area yesterday.

Acting on a tip-off, officials intercepted a Dhaka-bound microbus and recovered the venison, reportedly poached from the Sundarbans.

Lieutenant Musfiq Us Salehin, media officer of the Coast Guard West Zone, said the raid was conducted around 2:00pm as part of efforts to curb wildlife trafficking.

"The smuggled deer meat, along with the microbus and the detained individuals, has been handed over to the Chandpai Range of the Sundarbans East Forest Division for further legal action," he added.

The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to diverse wildlife, including the spotted deer. However, illegal poaching and wildlife trafficking pose significant threats to its biodiversity.

Local authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on such activities to safeguard the Sundarbans and its endangered species.

The six individuals will face legal proceedings under wildlife conservation laws, officials said.
