Hallmark boss, jailed for loan scam, dies at DMCH
Tanvir Mahmud, managing director of Hallmark Group, who was jailed in a fraud case, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital last night.
Mahmud had been serving a life sentence in Dhaka Central Jail for his involvement in the notorious Sonali Bank loan scam.
Assistant Inspector General of Prisons Md Jannatul Farhad confirmed the death to The Daily Star, noting that Mahmud had long-term health complications.
"Tanvir Mahmud had been suffering from various diseases for years, including kidney disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure," Farhad said.
"He also had long-standing issues with asthma, and urinary complications."
His condition reportedly deteriorated significantly Saturday noon while he was in Dhaka Central Jail. Later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and admitted there.
However, he breathed his last around 10:30pm while undergoing treatment at Ward 602.
Tanvir Mahmud was a key accused in the infamous Tk 4,000 crore Sonali Bank loan scam.
On March 19, last year, a Dhaka court sentenced nine people, including Hallmark Chairman Jasmine Islam and Managing Director Tanvir Mahmud, to life imprisonment in a case filed over swindling over Tk 10.5 crore out of Sonali Bank.
