Four university students arrested over rape, extortion of classmate in Savar

Accused allegedly blackmailed victim with photos and videos

Police on Wednesday arrested four youths in a case filed over the rape of a university student in Savar.

The arrestees are Delwar Bhuiyan, 26; Tajul Islam Taj, 23; Shraban Shaha, 23; and Antu Dewan, 28. All of them are students of an university in Savar. Three of them are classmates of the victim and Antu is a senior, said police.

The 21-year-old victim filed a case against them on Tuesday with Ashulia Police Station.

The accused were arrested from Ghorapir Mazar area on Wednesday evening, said Abdul Hannan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station.

According to the case statement, the victim was taken to Phulertek area in Ashulia on April 7 by three of her classmates on the pretext of a picnic. The young woman, along with the three accused, started from their campus in the morning. On the way, she fell unconscious after consuming a soft drink laced with sedatives.

When she regained consciousness at around 5:00pm that day, she found herself inside a room of a male hostel and understood that the three youths had raped her, said the case statement.

When she began to scream, the accused said that they had taken photos and videos of the incident and would post them on social media. They also threatened her with throwing acid, if she disclosed the matter.

Later, the accused extorted a total of Tk 96,000 from her in several phases.

On November 4, the three accused tried to force her to have sex with them, blackmailing her in similar fashion. But she refused, added the case details.

Two days later, the three accused tried to force her to have sex with their senior Antu, also an accused in the case.

As she refused, they dragged and slapped her, and abused her verbally, said the case statement.

When the victim tried to leave the area, the accused forced her to drink toxic liquor, which made her sick. She was let go and went to the campus on her own, where she fainted, and some of her classmates took her to a hospital.

Later, the victim's family members filed a written complaint with the university authorities.

On November 26, all the four accused again confined her in a room in the university and forced her to withdraw the written complaint, said the case statement.

Contacted on Wednesday night, the university's Assistant Registrar (Public Relations) Sharmin Sultana said she knows nothing about the incident.

OC Hannan said the four accused will be produced before the court on Thursday (December 4, 2025).
