Expat beaten to death for recording attack on BCL leader

A Bangladeshi expatriate died three days after he was beaten for allegedly recording a video of an attack on a Chandpur union Chhatra League leader in Kapasia of Gazipur.
The deceased, Enamul Haque, 35, from Tilshunia village in Kapasia upazila, had been living in Malaysia for 17 years and returned to Bangladesh three months prior to the incident.
He passed away around midnight on January 15 while being transported to Dhaka.
Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Kamal Hossain told The Daily Star yesterday that Enamul's sister, Parveen Akter, filed a case naming three individuals and several unidentified persons on Thursday night.
The named accused are Robin Mia, Bakul Mia, and Ripon Mia.
According to the victim's sister, Nasima Sultana, on January 13, a distribution programme for national identity (smart) cards was taking place at the Bhakoadi High School field in Tinshunia village.
Farid Hossain, president of Chandpur union Chhatra League (now banned), went there to collect his card. At that time, 20-25 people attacked him. Farid's associates retaliated, leading to a scuffle.
Enamul approached the scene upon hearing the commotion and began recording the incident on his phone, she said.
Seeing this, several unidentified individuals attacked him. He was critically injured and taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, doctors advised transferring him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, she added.
Nasima demanded justice for her brother's murder.
Chandpur Union BNP General Secretary Solaiman Morol said a service centre had been set up near the smart card distribution centre to assist people in collecting their cards.
The centre was managed by party members, including himself.
Farid, whose house is near the Bhakoadi centre, questioned their activities, prompting locals to confront him.
Solaiman claimed that Farid's associated were the ones who beat him at the spot. When they saw Enamul recording the incident, they also beat him.
Solaiman also claimed that neither he nor his party members knew Enamul or were involved in the assault. He also said as far as they know, Enamul has been living in Malaysia for a long time and does not have any political affiliation.
Kapasia Upazila Election Officer Tamanna Rashid told The Daily Star termed the incident a political clash, which falls outside the purview of the Election Commission.
OC Kamal Hossain said they are looking into the incident.
