Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested Tridib Chakraborty alias Mishuk, 40, the prime shooter in the murder case of Alamgir Hossain, joint general secretary of BNP's Jashore Municipality Ward No-7 unit and a former councillor of the same ward.
The arrest was made last night from an area adjacent to the Bejpara temple in Jashore town.
Tridib was produced before a court this afternoon, where he gave a confessional statement admitting his involvement in the killing. After recording the statement, the court ordered that he be sent to jail.
DB Sub-Inspector Alok Kumar Dey (PPM) said police initially identified Tridib by analysing CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas. Later, his location was confirmed through mobile phone tracking, leading to his arrest.
According to court and police sources, Tridib not only confessed to carrying out the murder but also stated in his confession that the main planners of the killing were Parash and his associate Sagar.
On the night of January 3, Alamgir was shot dead when assailants opened fire from a motorcycle in his own neighbourhood.
Following the incident, the victim's wife, Shamima, filed a murder case naming Parash and Sagar along with several unidentified accused.
After the case was filed, DB police launched an operation to arrest the main shooter.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Asadul Islam recorded the confessional statement and subsequently ordered Tridib to be sent to prison.
