Mystery surrounds the death of Abdur Razzak, a local Awami League leader, whose body was recovered early Friday morning from his home in Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet.

Police initially suspect murder, while his family believes he may have taken his own life.

Razzak, 55, vice-president of the South Surma upazila unit of the Awami League, was found dead on the rooftop of his home in Teligai village sometime between dawn and mid-morning, police said.

"There are multiple stab wounds on the body, and the incident likely occurred between 6:30am and 9:00am," said Mohammad Saiful Islam, additional deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.

According to family members, Razzak went to the rooftop for a morning walk after Fajr prayers, as was his daily routine. When he did not return by 9:00am, relatives went upstairs and discovered his blood-soaked body in a corner of the rooftop.

Speaking to reporters, family members said CCTV footage from the house shows no sign of any outsiders entering the premises before the incident. They also mentioned that Razzak had been struggling with mental distress for the past four to five months and was undergoing treatment.

Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dakshin Surma Police Station, said, "While the family suspects suicide, police are initially treating the case as a homicide."

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury confirmed that both the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have visited the scene and investigation is underway.
