Assault on Santal woman: Accused UP chairman arrested

Police yesterday (Wednesday) arrested a local union parishad chairman for allegedly assaulting a Santal woman and subsequently setting her house on fire in Gaibandha.

Rafiqul Islam, Gobindaganj's Rajahar union parishad chairman, was arrested from a hotel in the Gulistan area of the capital.

Nishat Angela, superintendent of Gaibandha police, said a team from Gobindaganj police station arrested the prime accused around 8:15am.

On Tuesday, 47 prominent citizens of the country issued a statement demanding punishment for those involved in the incident.

According to the case statement, on December 3, Rafiqul Islam and his men began filling up 16 decimals of land belonging to Santals. He claimed the ownership of the lands by forging documents, said Santals.

When some Santal men and women protested, Rafiqul beat up a Santal woman.

That same night, Chairman Rafiqul's people set fire to the woman's house, alleged the victim's son British Soren.

The next day, the victim's son filed a case against Rafiqul, his brother, and four other named individuals, along with 20 to 25 unnamed persons, according to the police.

Meanwhile, the Gaibandha District BNP unit expelled Rafiqul from all posts and positions following the incident.

Bulbul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station, said, "The main accused Rafiqul Islamin has been arrested from a hotel in Dhaka. We will bring him back to Gaibandha to complete the remaining legal process."
