Killing of boy: Hasina, 15 others sued at ICT

Another complaint has been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 15 others with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for allegedly committing crimes against humanity during a demonstration protesting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangladesh in 2021.
Shafiqul Islam filed the complaint yesterday over the killing of his 17-year-old son Asadullah in a police attack in Brahmanbaria allegedly ordered by the then-government in 2021.
After submitting the complaint, Shafiqul Islam spoke with journalists at the ICT building.
Describing the events, Shafiqul Islam said his son Asadullah went out to buy medicine during the protest on March 28. When Asadullah reached the Cumilla-Sylhet highway, he fell into the chaos of the demonstration.
"Police kicked him and then struck him with a gun. The severe injuries caused him to lose consciousness, but instead of being taken to the hospital immediately, he was kept in a room. It wasn't until midnight that he was finally transferred to Cumilla Medical College Hospital."
"I received a call around midnight from an anonymous person who informed me about the incident and instructed me to go to Cumilla Medical College Hospital."
"When I arrived at the hospital, I found my son lying on the ground with severe injuries. The doctors referred him to Dhaka. When we reached Dhaka Medical College Hospital, some people asked me if I was from Brahmanbaria. Then they threatened to withhold treatment for my son."
"They told me that no hospital in the country would treat my son, as the order had come from the highest level. I pleaded with them to begin treatment, but they ignored my request. Eventually, my son died on March 30."
Shafiqul said, "My son was killed by the police. I came to the ICT to seek justice for his death."
Akhter Hossain, the member secretary of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, accompanied Shafiqul Islam when the complaint was submitted to the ICT.
Akhter, who was one of the leaders of the protest against Modi's visit in 2021 at the Dhaka University campus, told reporters, "People from all walks of life protested across the country against the Indian Prime Minister's visit. Police opened fire on the protesters, resulting in at least 17 deaths.
"Injured people who participated in the protest were even barred from seeking treatment in Dhaka."
On Monday, the International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants against Hasina, her defence adviser Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, ex-IGP Benazir Ahmed, and eight others.
Last year, the ICT issued arrest warrant against Hasina in cases filed for her alleged involvement in crimes against humanity and genocide during the July-August uprising.
Hasina has been staying in India since she fled the country on August 5.
