ACC asked to seize income tax documents of Benazir's wife and daughter

A Dhaka court today ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to seize income tax documents of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed's wife Jissan Mirza and his younger daughter Tahseen Raisa Binte Benazir on charges of amassing wealth illegally.
Judge Md Zakir Hossain of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court passed the order after ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Joynal Abedin, who is also leading the investigation, submitted two separate applications.
ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir moved the petitions on behalf of the anti-graft body.
In the applications, the ACC officials said Jissan Mirza amassed wealth of Tk 31,69,55,149 from beyond known sources of income. She also concealed the wealth statement of Tk 1,60,71,334 to the ACC. Benazir assisted his wife to acquire the illegal money. So, it is necessary to seize and review all the income tax returns and related records of the accused for the sake of fair investigation into the case.
Tahseen Raisa acquired wealth of Tk 5,59,55,085 illegally which are also outside known sources of income. So, it is necessary to seize the income tax returns to investigate the matter in a proper way, the ACC officials said.
Earlier on December 15 last year, the ACC filed four separate cases against Benazir Ahmed, his wife and two daughters on charges of amassing wealth illegally.
The former IGP was made accused in all the cases.
Earlier, the ACC filed another case against Benazir on charges of passport forgery and the same court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate all moveable and immoveable assets of Benazir Ahmed and his family members in connection with alleged corruption.
On April 18 last year, the graft watchdog decided to launch an enquiry into the allegations against the former police chief of amassing illegal wealth.
