A truck plunged into Turag river after a one-way Bailey bridge, which connects Dhaka's Abdullahpur with Gazipur's Tongi, collapsed early today.

Eyewitnesses and local sources confirmed that the bridge suddenly gave way around 3:00am while a truck belonging to the Abul Khair Group was crossing it.

The vehicle fell into water, but no injuries were reported, Faridul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station told The Daily Star.

"We are aware of the incident and have sent police to the site," the OC added.

Gazipur Roads and Highways Department Engineer Khandaker Shariful Alam said, "This bailey bridge was initially constructed in 2022 as a temporary structure during the construction of the larger bridge. Since the main bridge has been completed, the Bailey bridge is no longer essential."

However, a warning sign was installed earlier, indicating the bridge's risky condition, the engineer said adding that plans are now underway to remove the broken bridge from the river and rebuild it.

An HR Admin official from the Dhaka office of the Abul Khair Group, speaking anonymously, said that there were no fatalities. The driver and helper escaped the accident, he said.

Despite the availability of the new bridge, the bailey bridge has continued to see regular use. Two bailey bridges span the Turag River at Tongi and Abdullahpur -- one carries traffic from Dhaka to Mymensingh, while the other facilitates the opposite direction.
