At least eight people suffered burn injuries in an explosion originating from a gas leak at a car garage in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area today.
Of the injured, two were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, while the rest were released after first aid.
The incident took place around 1:00 pm at “Mona's Garage” near the Geneva Camp on Humayun Road.
The victims were identified as garage owner Md Mona, 40, Rehan Badol, 23, Tarek Rahman, 23, Ifran, 18, Azad, 55, Miraj, 36, Akash, 25, and Jony, 35.
Mona said a private car was brought to the garage for repairs at noon.
“The mechanics were working on the car's engine and gas line. Several of us were working on different cars inside the garage when the explosion occurred,” he said, adding that the blast happened due to a gas leak from the private car.
They were immediately rushed to the burn institute.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute's emergency department, told The Daily Star, “Ifran suffered 16 percent burns and Tarek 20 percent”.
He confirmed that six other injured were discharged after primary treatment.
