Death toll from Ctg’s Halishahar gas blast rises to 4

Five remain in critical condition with severe burns

Another burn victim of a gas explosion at a house in Chattogram’s Halishahar yesterday has died, raising the death toll to four.

Ashura Akter Pakhi, 36, who had suffered 100 percent burns, was undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. She died around 11:00pm on Tuesday, said Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon and assistant professor at the institute.

Earlier in the morning, 16-year-old Shawon, son of Sakhawat and Rani, died while undergoing treatment, and Samir Ahmed Sumon, 40, passed away at noon. Shawon's mother, Nurjahan Akter Rani, 40, the first victim in the incident, died on the way to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

The explosion happened around 4:30am on Monday in a flat in the six-storey “Halima Manzil” building in Halishahar H Block. A fire broke out following a loud blast when members of the same family were having sehri.

Of the nine injured, five are now undergoing treatment in critical condition. Among them, Sakhawat Hossain sustained 100 percent burns, Shipon Hossain 80 percent, Umme Aiman Snigdha 38 percent, Ayesha 45 percent, and Farhan Ahmed Anas 30 percent.

According to the Fire Service’s initial findings, the explosion occurred when accumulated gas in the kitchen ignited as the stove was lit.

A probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
