Matir Moina broke new ground as the first Bangladeshi film to be released in India with its opening at Nandan theatre in Kolkata on July 31. Several leading personalities of Kolkata's cine circuit were present at the opening, including eminent filmmakers Mrinal Sen, Gautam Ghosh, Raja Mitra, and Raja Sen, among others. Filmmakers Tareque and Catherine Masud and actor Jayanto Chattopadhyay were also present at the event. In his speech at the programme, Gautam Ghosh said, "The commercial release of Matir Moina in Kolkata should be considered a historic moment. Those who don't want to see a stronger bond between film industries in India and Bangladesh, tried to impede this release, but they weren't successful." Tareque Masud said, "In its small way, the commercial release of Matir Moina will hopefully open the door to bilateral releases between our two countries." Renowned Indian filmmaker Mrinal Sen watched the film along with the audience, his third time viewing it. When asked by some television channels, including ATN Bangla, about his reaction, Sen said, "I have seen it three times by now. I think that says a lot about my reaction to the film."
