NBR order to freeze Hasina's bank accounts unjust: AL

Awami League (AL) yesterday termed unjust the NBR order to freeze all bank accounts of party president Sheikh Hasina.

"I think the Awami League chief has been held guilty by freezing bank accounts of all her family members before proving her faults. It is not justified," said AL Organising Secretary Mahmudur Rahman Manna.

Expressing surprise, Manna urged the caretaker government not to victimise anyone. He said the AL would continue legal battle to get the party chief released.

Meanwhile, Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy also expressed surprise over freezing his bank account in the country.

"I have an account in the country but there is no transaction for several years," he said.

Joy posed how the Bangladesh Bank or government would freeze his account in the US? "Conspiracies are going on to victimise me and file false cases. At first they (government) would ask me to show accounts. And then they [government] would file case against me for not giving the accounts," said Joy.

Hasina's special aide Dr Hasan Mahmud yesterday termed it violation of human rights and urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to reconsider the decision. The freezing of bank account of Bangabandhu Memorial Trust will stop study of around 1200 students.

He further said the treatment of the ailing husband of Hasina will also be hampered if his bank account is frozen.

Meanwhile, Michigan unit of the AL staged a rally at Hamtramck city and submitted a memorandum to the city mayor demanding release of Sheikh Hasina.

AL leaders Sayeed Ahmed Helal, Khalid Ahmed, Faruque Ahmed Chan, Nawshad Ahmed Chowdhry and Mohammad Shahbuddin addressed the rally.

US unit of Jubo League will submit a memorandum to Bangladesh Consulate and Human Right Watch in New York on August 6, according to a report of the New York based news agency News World.

Besides, US unit of the AL will also stage a demonstration in front of the UN office on August 15 and observe the 32nd death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 19.
