Former MP faces extortion charges

An extortion complaint was lodged with Bagmara Police Station against former BNP lawmaker Abu Hena yesterday evening.SM Nazrul Islam, the dismissed principal of Damnas College, in his complaint alleged that he gave Abu Hena a total of Tk 10 lakh at different times at his apartment at Concord Tower at Bangla Motor in the capital in 2002 to keep his job and those of 33 others. "We recorded the complaint as a general diary and will send it to Ramna Police Station in Dhaka where the extortion incident took place", said Mirza Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Bagmara Police Station. Hena demanded Tk 35 lakh, but we gave him Tk 10 lakh, alleged the complainant. Nazrul further alleged that Hena threatened him and 33 other teachers of the college to dismiss from services if they failed to pay him in full the sums. However, Hena later removed Nazrul and some other teachers of the college, as they could not provide the rest of the money.
