Move to reinstate former secretary to PM Nurul Islam

A move has been initiated to reinstate the former secretary to the then prime minister, AHM Nurul Islam, who was given forced retirement by the BNP-led four-party alliance government on June 3, 2004.

Reliable sources said a proposal to reinstate Nurul Islam will be sent to the Council of Advisers soon for consideration. Meantime, the Ministry of Law has given positive opinion regarding his appeal to return his job.

The Ministry of Establishment has also prepared a proposal to cancel his retrenchment order and reinstate him with arrear salaries and allowances from the date of his forced retirement. A summary to this effect will soon be sent to the administrative affairs committee of the Council of Advisers.

Nurul Islam filed a writ petition to the High Court challenging the order of forced retirement, which is now under trial.

The law ministry opined that the service of Nurul Islam can be restored if he withdraws his writ petition filed against the government, sources said.

Nurul Islam joined as the private secretary to the then prime minister Khaleda Zia immediately after her four-party government took office. Later, he was made acting secretary to the PM on September 7, 2003.

But he was given forced retirement following a row with some high profile officials at the PMO and also with Khaleda Zia's eldest son Tarique Rahman.
