Gen Moeen warns federation chiefs
Sports Reporter
National Sports Council (NSC) chairman and Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed yesterday warned the sport federation bosses to increase activities or face the consequences.Moeen, who took over as the NSC boss in July, had a meeting with presidents of 36 federations and four associations at the NSC yesterday to have their words. While talking to reporters afterwards, Moeen said that he realises that most federations are inactive. "They must come alive to give sports momentum. We admit that the federations are not solvent. I will take the initiative to tackle this problem but if the federations do not work properly, they will not get financial help in the future," Moeen warned. "We will give priority to the popular games. Popularity and action will be the criteria to get government fund. The federations must go to the grassroots to find athletes and nourish them for the greater stage. "The NSC will provide grounds and facilities but the federations will have to run the game." Moeen also asked all the federations to submit their year planner to the NSC by this December. He said he would personally request all the banks, major business houses and the mobile phone operators to come forward to sponsor a game. The NSC chief reminded that sports and education has a deep relation which has been ignored for long. There are some schools that do not have grounds. I will talk with the Education Ministry about this. "In recent times, the need to create good coaches, which is very important to groom players, has been ignored while constructions have been built in the name of sports. We will train coaches in abroad and bring foreign coaches where necessary." In reply to a question about the federation presidents, most of whom are top government officials and cannot give enough attention to the federations, Moeen said that future federation presidents would have be sports lover, give time and bring fund.
