537 legalise wealth in 8 northern dists

About 537 people legalised their wealth amounting to Tk 60.86 crore in eight districts of the region in last two months, joint commissioner of the Department of Tax here Shushil Kumar Shastri said.They legalised wealth on payment of Tk 8.31 lakh as tax during the period. The amount of tax is likely to be doubled in the region in the next two months as a large number of people are yet to legalise their wealth, he said. On condition of anonymity, an official of the Department of Tax here said that many of the 537 did not show their real income and wealth. He said if all of them showed their real income and wealth, the amount of tax would have been raised to Tk 15 crore in last two months. He said without disclosing the name of an industrialist at Haragachh that the industrialist had paid Tk 1.5 crore as tax instead of actual tax amounting to Tk 3.5 crore. Some unscrupulous staff of the Department of Tax helped tax payers pay lesser amount of money as tax, he alleged.
