Concern over laid-off jute mills, workers
Staff Correspondent
Various socio-political organisations have expressed grave concern over the fate of the laid-off workers of the four state-owned jute mills that blew their final whistle at midnight on July 31 and their families. In a joint statement, Karmojibi Nari (KN) President Shirin Akhter and General Secretary Sharmeen Kabir alleged that the nation's economy would be hit hard if jute mill workers kept losing their jobs and this would further increase the rate of unemployment in the country. They urged the government to make arrangements to employ the laid-off workers and to ensure proper education facilities for their children. In a different statement, Labour Employment Right President Mosleh Uddin Moshu alleged that the state-owned jute mills and their laid-off workers are facing a huge crisis because of the ill-conceived policies of the government. The mill workers are paying the ultimate price for the reform policies introduced by the government, the statement added. Moshu called on the government and the concerned authorities to pay up the arrears of the laid-off workers and thereby bring an end to the untoward situation.
