Some 89 students and a headmaster fell sick during outbreaks of mass psychogenic illness (MPI), also known as mass hysteria, in different parts of the country yesterday. Our Narayanganj correspondent reports: The headmaster and 25 students of Kamrangir Char Government Primary School were affected by mass hysteria. A student of the school fainted after looking at a syringe. As the news spread, others, including the headmaster, started to fall sick. Later, the syringe was examined, but nothing harmful was found. Our Rajshahi correspondent adds: About 50 students of Durgapur Hoza Government Primary School fell victim to MPI. They underwent treatment at Durgapur Upazila Health Complex. In Munshiganj, the authorities of Hashara Kali High School declared the school closed for a few days after 14 students fell sick in an outbreak of MPI, our correspondent reports. Mass hysteria has continued to break out at schools in different parts of the country for the last few days, causing panic among the students. The experts said an outbreak of mass psychogenic illness is a time of anxiety and worry. The illness is aggravated by malnutrition, tension and lack of tolerance. The victims are mostly students aged between 13 and 25. The experts also assured that the illness has no long-term effects on the victims and there is nothing to worry about.
