Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) cancelled licences of two land phone companies for their failure to start operations on time. It also fined two other companies Tk 4 crore for their failure to increase subscribers. "We cancelled licences of Bashundhara and Dominix, as they did not start their operations," BTRC Chairman Maj Gen (retd) Manzurul Alam told a private television channel yesterday. "Moreover, Dominix told us [BTRC] that they do not need the licence," he added. Bangla Phone and Bijoy Phone were fined Tk 4 crore, as they could not increase their number of subscribers. Five land phone companies may get licences to operate in the central zone of the country in which four companies have already received licences for operation, the channel reported.
