Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed yesterday termed flood as a national crisis and urged all to help the flood-affected people in combating the natural disaster.

"It is impossible for the army or the government alone to fight it. So, every able person should come forward to help the flood-affected people," said the Army chief while addressing a gathering at a flood-affected village in Netrakona.

The army chief witnessed the prevailing situation in the flood-affected areas of the district travelling by a helicopter. Later, he distributed relief items among the affected people, reports our Netrakona correspondent.

The army chief also said an army medical team had been working there and district administration has taken preparations to tackle the crisis.

Moeen also urged the concerned authorities to take necessary preparations for rehabilitation of the flood-affected people.

Dhiraj Malakar, secretary for relief and disaster management, Maj Gen Mujahid Uddin, Brig Gen Anwarul Azim, Lt Col Azim, Deputy Commissioner Ayatullah Majumdar and Superintendent of Police Shakhawat Hossain accompanied the army chief.

The deputy commissioner told reporters that about 1.75 lakh people of seven upazilas in the district have been affected and at least 9,000 houses were damaged in flood.

"The government has already allotted rice and cash for the affected people," he added.

Meanwhile, the army chief has postponed his upcoming India and Pakistan tour in view of the exigencies of floods in the country, said UNB.
