'269 incidents take place in May'
As many as 269 incidents of repression against women and children took place across the country in May, says a report of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association (BNWLA) yesterday. According to the report, dowry still seems to be a curse in the society as 17 women were killed, 13 tortured, one received acid burns and another committed suicide over dowry-related incidents. There were 75 incidents of rape including nine incidents of gang rape while eight women were killed after the rape. The report said 34 murder cases were filed with various police stations. Besides, 30 women committed suicide, 11 suffered physical torture, 15 were victims of acid-burns, three were victims of fatwa while 33 women and children were abducted and trafficked in last month. There were 21 incidents of unnatural death. The report was prepared on the basis of stories published in 10 national dailies, said a press release of BNWLA.
