CU increases student fees

Chittagong University (CU) authorities increased student fees as well as the fees teachers, officials and employees had to pay to get different facilities from the university.The CU authorities in its 440th syndicate meeting on Thursday increased the fees following recommendations placed before it by a four-member committee. The increased fees are likely to be effective from the next fiscal year, sources said. The four-member committee headed by Professor Dr Muhammad Abdul Mannan Chowdhury of Economics department was formed at the 425th syndicate meeting on August 21, 2005. It prepared the recommendations after reviewing the proposals made by two other previous committees. As per the increased charges, students of Arts, Commerce and Social Science faculties have to pay Tk 240 per year as tuition fees, whereas previously the fee was Tk 144. Students of Science faculty, all departments under Biological Science faculty and institutes have to pay Tk 300, whereas they had to pay Tk 180 previously. Session fees were fixed at Tk 500 for each fresher while the yearly fees for students of second year to masters were fixed at Tk 200. Fee for academic transcripts was fixed at Tk 1000, whereas it was Tk 500 previously. Students for English, Japanese, French, German, Arabic and Persian language courses now would have to pay Tk 2000 while it was Tk 480 in the past. Fees for diploma courses were fixed at Tk 2500 while it was Tk 720 previously. The authorities also doubled the charges for M Phil and PhD courses which so far stood at Tk 7,072 and Tk 6,172 respectively. It also raised the residence fee for all the residential students to Tk 1250 from Tk 500. The amount includes hall entry fee of Tk 100, residence fee of Tk 400 (per session), utensil fees of Tk 150 (per session), hall establishment fee of Tk 400 (per session) and hall caution money of Tk 200 (non-refundable). Besides, all the existing fees for hall union, transport, certificate, registration, establishment, treatment, library and educational development have been increased by 10 percent. On the other hand, charges in transport sector have also been increased for the teachers, officers and employees. The teachers have to pay Tk 8 for each kilometre journey by small vehicles and Tk 1500 for reservation. The teachers and officials would have to pay Tk 100 while the employees have to pay Tk 70 for traveling up to the campus from the city by buses. The fees were Tk 70 and Tk 50 respectively. Besides, employees residing on the campus would have to pay an amount while raising structures on their own depending on the area of land they are using.
