EU troika due June 6 to assess situation
Unb, Dhaka
A five-member European Union troika comprising representatives of Germany, Portugal and EU Commission will arrive on a four-day visit on June 6 to assess the prevailing pre-election political situation in Bangladesh."They are coming for taking the temperature of the situation," EU Head of the Delegation Ambassador Dr Stefan Frowein told UNB yesterday evening. The trio will meet the chief adviser, the chief election commissioner, the chairman of the Anti-corruption Commission, political party leaders at secretary level and representatives of the civil society. "Agenda of discussion will be, of course, election matters, its timeframe, the democratic process and human-rights situation and so on and so forth," Frowein said. He said the EU always sends its troika to study the entire political situation of its developing partners. "It will be virtually a listening process," he said. Asked whether the Troika will like to hear about a clearer timeline for the election, the ambassador said the timeframe of the election is there and the troika would love to see if each ingredient is in place leading to the holding of a free and fair election. To another question, Ambassador Frowein said the EU member-states are ready to provide all possible assistance to the Election Commission through UNDP for holding a free and credible election in Bangladesh.
