At least 18 people died and 17 others were injured after being struck by lightning in Mymensingh, Lalmonirhat, Netrakona and Rangamati yesterday.At least nine people were killed and five were injured in Mymensingh alone yesterday, our Mymensingh correspondent reports. District Relief and Rehabilitation Office (DRRO) sources said five people died in Sadar, two in Phulpur and one each in Haluaghat and Nandail upazilas. The victims are Monir, 20, of Char Jailkhana, Rabbi, 13, Rafique, 12, of Char Jailkhana, Md Rafiq, 13, of Miaz Bari, Shahed Miah, 30, of Bhawanipur, Rani, 9, of Shakai, Nilufar, 3, of Nalchaprea, Rahima, 45, of Nalchapara, and Manju Mia, 32, of Bil Badra. The DRRO office sources said all of them were struck by lightning early yesterday morning. At least four people were killed and 10 others were injured after they were struck by lightning in Hatibandha and Patgram upazilas of Lalmonirhat early yesterday morning, a correspondent in Lalmonirhat reports. The victims were identified as Dibendra Nath Burman, 45, Avilash Chandra, 12, and Gajendra Nath, 32, of Jawrani in Hatibandha upazila, and Akhtar Hossain, 38, of Nabinagar in Patgram upazila. Hari Ram Roy, 25, his wife Radha Rani, 20, of Jawrani, Kutub Miah, 36, his younger brother Khurshed Alam, 24, of Uttar Jawrani and Nirmol Chandra, 25, Khalis Khandkar, 35, of Nabinagar under Patgram upazila were injured critically and were under treatment in Patgram Health Complex and Hatibandha Health Complex. Three people died after being struck by lightning at Madan and Durgapur upazilas of Netrakona early yesterday morning, our Netrakona correspondent reports. Police and local sources said Sadek Mia, 20, Ratan Mia, 22, of Ratragram under Durgapur upazila and Ashraful Islam, 30, of Chandgaon under Madan upazila were killed. Two fishermen were killed and two others were injured after they were struck by lightning in Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati yesterday, UNB reports. The dead were identified as M Aiyub Ali, 42, and Noor Hossain, 25, while the injured as M Sohel, 26, and Alamgir Hossain, 50. Local sources said the thunderbolt hit the fishermen when they were going to catch fish during heavy rain. They were taken to Baghaichhari Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared Aiyub Ali and Noor Hossain dead.
