Initiative to turn wastes into 'wet','dry' substances

For the first time in Bangladesh, an initiative to turn wastes into 'wet' (biodegradable) and 'dry' (non-biodegradable) substances was launched by the Uttara Sector 5 Welfare Association at Uttara Model Town in the city yesterday.With the technical supports from the Waste Concern, Sky Link, Clean Tech and the financial help from the KATALYST-Swiss contact, a multimedia presentation was demonstrated on the importance of waste separation at the launching ceremony. Baskets for 'Dry' (non-biodegradable) waste were also distributed among the residents of Uttara Model Town, a press release of the Waste Concern said. More than 400 community people, including housewives and children were present on the occasion. Dhaka is one of the fastest growing metropolises of the world with an annual average growth rate of a 6.6 per cent in population, the press release said. Within the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) area alone, the population is estimated at Seven million, generating some 3500-4000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily.
