AL leaders meet Hasina, talk Jalil issue

Senior Awami League (AL) leaders, mostly lawyers, visited party chief Sheikh Hasina at her Dhanmondi residence last night and discussed various issues including legal assistance for party's detained General Secretary Abdul Jalil.Suranjit Sengupta, Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Syed Ashraful Islam, advocate Shahara Khatun and advocate Abdul Mannan Khan were among the leaders who visited Hasina. "We discussed different issues including legal assistance for Abdul Jalil as he might be produced before a court tomorrow (today)," Syed Ashraful Islam, joint general secretary of AL, told The Daily Star last night. MID-LEVEL AL LEADERS BUCK UP HASINA Mid-level and district-level leaders of AL assured their party chief of their loyalty, saying they would always stand beside her like they did in the past. Sheikh Hasina advised them to monitor the present situation carefully and make moves accordingly. Several mid and district level leaders met Sheikh Hasina during the past few days following the arrest of AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil and influential presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim on May 28. Habibur Rahman Siraj, AL labour affairs secretary, Hasan Mahmud, environment affairs secretary and personal assistant to Sheikh Hasina, advocate Fazle Rabbi, president, Naogaon district AL, Abdul Malek, general secretary of Naogaon district AL, Advocate Asaduzzaman, president, Narsingdi district AL among others yesterday called on their party chief at her Sudha Sadan residence at Dhanmondi in the capital. "Sheikh Hasina advised us to observe the prevailing situation carefully and to take steps in view of that," Habibur Rahman said while talking to The Daily Star outside Sudha Sadan after the meeting. "We urged her (Hasina) not to break down as she expressed her concerns over the arrest of some of our party top brass," a district AL leader said requesting anonymity. Another district leader told The Daily Star that they had come to enquire about their leader and to assure that they are always with her like they had been in the past.
