Police recovered four hand grenades, a bomb, 25 machine gun bullets and magazines near a school in Banani in the capital last night. The devices and ammunition were found wrapped in separate polyethylene bags and abandoned near Play Pen, an English medium school on Banani Road-7. A 10-member bomb disposal squad of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) rushed to the spot and took the grenades and the bomb away. Major Saidul Alam who led the bomb disposal unit told The Daily Star the powerful grenades were UK-made M 36 grenades. Law enforcers think criminals might have dumped those fearing capture. Afsar Uddin, a security guard of the school, around 3:30pm found the devices, bullets, magazines and two cleaning kits abandoned near the boundary wall of the school. He informed the school authorities about the matter and they immediately informed police. The school, however, closed at 2:00pm yesterday.
