Rain brings much relief
Heatwave kills 7 more

Even though moderate rainfall in the capital and at many other parts of the country yesterday evening brought much relief after days of sultry weather, at least seven more people died of heatstroke across the country as the mercury remained high during daytime yesterday.

Despite the shower, weathermen said it is not a sign that the daytime temperature would fall and forecast the day temperature would remain more-or-less unchanged across the country and the heatwave sweeping over Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka divisions would continue.

The Met office also forecast yesterday that rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely at one or two places in Chittagong, Barisal, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions within 6:00pm today.

People in the Dhaka city heaved a sigh of relief as an evening shower yesterday helped cool down the condition. People haunted by the persisting heatwave, welcomed the brief rainfall.

Besides, Dhaka, some places in Sylhet and Barisal divisions experienced rainfall.

A correspondent from Sharsha, Jessore reports Romesa Begum, 50, died of heatstroke yesterday at Shibobash of Sharsha upazila.

A satellite television channel reported that six others died of heatstroke in Dinajpur, Meherpur and Madaripur districts.

Dinajpur experienced the highest temperature, 40.5 degrees Celsius, in the country yesterday while the lowest, 23.7 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Sylhet.
