Public universities

Muhammad Zamir has called for reforms in the public universities in Bangladesh. Citing the many critical resource constraints faced by these universitiesincluding the sad state of the librarieshe has correctly called for greater government support. I just wish to add that, an important fact that needs to addressed here is the refusal of past governments to understand that if the universities are to attract the best talents of the country into teaching, teachers' salaries need to be made competitive with the business sectors. Unless higher level teaching and research are demonstrably rewarded by the government and society at large, teaching will remain the way it has for the last half a century.
