Election Commission

The EC is gradually realising the ground reality and has made partial admission that the voter list can be done without affixing the photo of the voter. Sooner they realise the full truth, the better. We found in the ATN Bangla news that the CEC was clearly irritated when asked about lifting of the embargo on indoor politics. The reason for not lifting the embargo, as we hear, is the apprehension of the government that there is no guarantee that the pre-1/11 politics would not emerge again and that the time is not ripe enough for such action. The question is who is to give guarantee and how? The government may kindly specify those issues and allow the principal stakeholders, political parties, to respond in a planned and systematic way as is expected by the government.

We also think that the government should consider initiating the necessary process for lifting the embargo on indoor politics, which has a direct bearing on the preparatory work and management of the national election in 2008.
