Solar energy needed to meet power crisis
KCC mayor tells workshop


A daylong workshop on 'Promotion of Renewable Energy Khulna Division Project' was held at Hotel Castle Salam in the city yesterday.

The project supported by European Commission will need Tk five crore for its implementation by Khulna City Corporation (KCC). KCC Mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman inaugurated the workshop.

The city mayor said that need of a solar energy plant cannot be avoided in the wake of a severe power crisis in Khulna division.

"Business enterprises and household works will be benefited from this solar energy plant. So, we must make the best use of this opportunity to meet shortage of electricity taking services of solar energy plant," said the city mayor.

Later, Editor of Dainik Purbanchal Alhaj Liaquat Ali told newsmen about possibilities and constraints of promotion, use and extension of solar energy in Khulna division.

He said energy supply in developing countries is marked by substantial shortage. This results in problems with further economic development and also affects private households.

Khulna division is vulnerable for its lack of own fossil energy resources, the Purbanchal editor said.

The workshop was attended by more than a hundred foreign experts, local businessmen, leaders of professional organisations and media men.

Vice Chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) Dr Nausher Ali Morol, Project Chief Dr Bibhuti Roy, Technical Director Gerhard Schoris, Project Manager Dr Rulf Dreharr, Solar Energy Expert Morzio Armani and Chief Engineer of Khulna City Corporation Liaquat Ali Sharif also spoke on the occasion.
