7000 children fall victim to cancer a year

Lack of proper healthcare services and social awareness are the major reasons behind the death of child cancer patients, experts said at a seminar yesterday.Around 7000 children fall victim to cancer every year, they said, adding that 90 percent of them die even before the disease is diagnosed. Ashic Foundation organised the seminar on 'Palliative care in childhood cancer in Bangladesh' at RDEC seminar hall at Agargaon in the city where doctors, nurses and representatives of different social organisations and NGOs took part. Health and Family Welfare Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Dr ASM Matiur Rahman said the caretaker government will try to provide all kinds of supports for safeguarding the cancer-affected patients. Canadian High Commissioner Barbara Richardson, Prof Dr MR Khan, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr MA Mannan, World Cancer Federation (WCF) Founder Dr G Morrison and Ashic Foundation President Afzal Hossain Chowdhury, Trustee Ashif Hossain Chowdhury and former secretary Badiur Rahman were also present at the seminar.
