Tigers focus on more improvement

Habibul Bashar cannot ignore the criticisms for his poor form during the Cricket World Cup over the last two months as the Bangladesh cricket captain prepares for his last one-day home series."It's definitely my last home series as we are not to play one-day cricket at home for almost a year. But I have yet to decide about quitting one-day cricket now," Bashar told yesterday during the Tigers' first training session for the series against India. The 14-member one-day squad trained in two sessions in groups at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur with four more cricketers Khaled Mashud, Tushar Imran, Alok Kapali and Nafis Iqbal -- joining the weeklong camp. Bashar admitted that stern criticism played a part in his decision to quit one-day cricket just after the World Cup. "It was really frustrating. It hurt me because I never thought I would be criticised this much after leading the team to a very good show. "My World Cup form was bad but in the past couple of years, I was consistent. I hope to rediscover my form quickly," said the 34-year-old, whose captaincy at times was called 'defensive' in the Caribbean. "We don't have a star bowler like (Lasith) Malinga. Our resources are limited. So situation forced me to be protective some times." Bangladesh's stunning victory against India in the World Cup would definitely play on the minds of two teams when they will be pitted against each other in three ODIs, but the skipper said there was no pressure to win again. "We have reached a stage where playing to our potentials would be enough to win a match. Whether the opposition play well or bad, does not matter. Still, our target is at least one win but I won't say that winning the series won't be on our minds," he said with a happy smile. "We want to enjoy the games and play well." When reminded of high expectation and crowd pressure, Bashar said that they were under more stress in the West Indies. "Our focus is on our team and how to get the best performance from the players because we are not going to enjoy much home advantage. India are familiar with these conditions and they have players able to exploit them. "It's true they will not have Sachin (Tendulkar) and Sourav (Ganguly) but their replacements are young and promising and have earned their places after commendable performances. They would also be eager to prove themselves." Considering India's strength in spin, Bangladesh drafted in Kapali to practise leg-break bowling for the nets. It seemed that the four cricketers who joined the one-day team, were actually called to tune up for the Test series. "Our three spinners have been doing remarkable well but still, we can't demand turning wickets because of India's variety in this department. Normal and sporting wicket would serve us better," opined the Tigers leader. "Our spin trio has proved that they can be effective on any kind of surface." Bashar was still worried about the opening pair and mentioned that they need to settle the everlasting problem for more success. "We have problems and need Shahriar Nafees to recover his form very soon. He has just gone through a bad-patch that can happen to any player." His new deputy Mohammad Ashraful told that his role as a batsman has not changed after being named vice-captain. "Vice-captains have nothing to do when the captain is there. My job is to steady our batting. This series is very important because we have to prove that our win over India was not a fluke. They will also be eager to seek revenge," said Ashraful. "Still, I feel if we do well, we can not only win a match but the series too."
