Journalists being harassed taking advantage of emergency

Leaders of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ have alleged that a vested quarter within the government is harassing journalists and mass media taking advantage of the state of emergency and called for putting an end to this situation.The leaders urged the government to immediately announce wage board award for the journalists, stop killing and repression of journalists and cancel all black laws that are being used to repress the journalist community. The demands were put forward at a discussion jointly organised by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalist (DUJ) in observance of the World Press Freedom Day at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday. Chief of United Nations Information Centre (Unic) Kazi Ali Reza presented a keynote speech while BFUJ Secretary General Manzurul Ahsan Bulbul chaired the meeting. BFUJ Secretary General Abdul Jalil Bhuyian, Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former BFUJ secretary general Shajahan Mia and DUJ president Altaf Mahmud spoke on the occasion. The union leaders said freedom of newspapers owners and freedom of journalists do not carry the same meaning. It is regretful the journalists community is facing difficulties due to misdeeds of some newspaper owners, they added.
